UFC 182 Results

UFC 182 emanated live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, Saturday night on pay-per-view. The main event saw Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier clash over the UFC light heavyweight championship, and top ranked lightweights Donald Cerrone and Myles Jury square off in the co-main event. Below are the UFC 182 results:

UFC Light Heavyweight Championship
Jon Jones def. Daniel Cormier via unanimous decision (49-46, 49-46, 4946)
In the main event, we got a dog fight fought inside of a phone booth for the UFC light heavyweight championship, with Jon Jones retaining his title against Daniel Cormier. It was an incredibly grinding fight, with both men constantly in each other’s face. Round one started off with a flurry, with both men swinging wildly. Jones caught a Cormier kick midway through the round, and used it to take the former Olympian down. It was the first takedown allowed by Cormier in his MMA career. The action packed round closed out with a flying knee attempt by the champ. Round two was more of the same, with Cormier constantly closing the distance. Towards the end of the round, Jones landed a big head kick followed by a big elbow, but Cormier stormed back with massive uppercuts in the clinch for the final thirty seconds of the round. Round three was another close one, with both men exchanging takedown attempts, and both coming up empty. The round was very clinch heavy, like the majority of the bout, and it ended with a flying armbar attmept by Jones. The fourth round was the champ’s most dominant one, as he landed an astounding three takedowns on Cormier, and controlling him along the fence in the clinch. The final round saw both men exhausted, clinched together for a solid half of the round. Cormier finally landed a takedown on the champ with about a minute left in the fight, but Jones popped back to his feet right away. The fight ended as it began, with both men swinging wild haymakers at each other in the center of the octagon. Each judge gave all but one round to the reigning champ, and Jones thwarted his biggest test to date to retain his championship.

Donald Cerrone def. Myles Jury via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)
In the co-main event of the evening, Donald Cerrone started his year off right by picking up his sixth straight win, this time by schooling Myles Jury for fifteen minutes. Round one saw Jury score an early takedown off of a caught Cerrone kick, but Cerrone quickly locked up an omoplata. Jury defended well, but Cerrone eventually used it to transition to side control, then back mount. Once on Jury’s back, Cerrone controlled him the for the rest of the round, finally locking up a rear-naked choke with one minute left. Jury was able to defend, and he also defended a last second armbar as well. The next two rounds saw Cerrone control the center of the octagon, whipping kicks to the legs, body and head of Jury. Halfway through the final round, Cerrone landed his biggest strike of the night, wobbling Jury with a left head kick. In the end, Cerrone swept every judges score card, and he’s looking the best he’s ever looked.

Brad Tavares def. Nate Marquardt via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)
In a middleweight bout, Brad Tavares got back on the winning track with a dominant win over former Strikeforce champion Nate Marquardt. Tavares controlled the distance the entire fight, picking Marquardt apart with a strong jab and good kicks to the legs and body. Tavares also defended all of Marquardt’s takedown attempts, helping the Hawaiian cruised to a unanimous decision win.

Kyoji Horiguchi vs Louis Gaudinot via unanimous decision (29-28, 30-27, 30-27)
In the lone flyweight fight on the card, top Japanese prospect Kyoji Horiguchi bested TUF 14 veteran Louis Gaudinot in a competitive bout. The contest saw Gaudinot maintain control of the center of the octagon throughout, but Horiguchi kept popping in-and-out, continually beating Gaudinot to the punch. It was a close fight, but Horiguchi was clearly the victor, and he could be a win or two away from a flyweight title shot.

Hector Lombard def. Josh Burkman via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28)
The night’s opening bout was a bit of a strange one. Top welterweight contender Hector Lombard welcomed TUF 2 veteran Josh Burkman back to the octagon for the first time since 2008. Round one saw Lombard stalking Burkman around the cage for five minutes, with both men pausing only to trade wild, powerful shots in the middle of the mat. The round was close, and the pace in round two slowed considerably. Lombard continued to stalk Burkman, who kept dropping his hands, inviting the heavy-handed Lombard to trade with him. Lombard didn’t really engage with his foe though, and most of the round was a staring contest. The final round saw Lombard land an early takedown, but when Burkman managed to get back to his feet, it was more of the same. In the end, Lombard’s leg kicks and ability to control the pace won him the fight, and a possible #1 contender’s fight.
