Athleticism: B+
Plus athlete who stands out amongst Ivy League competition. Quick moving and has nice fluidity moving in the open field for a lineman. Burst is very good and creates a lot of power when blitzing from a 2 point stance. Candidate for conversion to a 3-4 linebacker.
Pass Rush: C+
Uses his athleticism to his advantage in this area. Has the initial quickness to jump off the snap and get an advantage versus his opponent, with the closing burst to get home and register the sack. Too reliant on his athleticism at this point and needs to better incorporate rush moves into his game. Uses an excellent spin move, but lacks an effective complement to it.
Run Defense: D
Lacks the size and strength to hold up versus the run in the NFL at this point, especially as a defensive end. Negated in short yardage and struggles to anchor. Can gain penetration on occasion, is just not very effective even against inferior competition. Likely won’t ever be a three-down lineman in the NFL. Gets shoved aside when he is not moving with momentum and is at a loss for power at this stage.
Technique: C+
Needs to do a better job of protecting his feet, as he can be cut down fairly easily and while moving through trash. Has pop in his hands to knock opposing linemen back, but needs to use them to more consistent effect. Does a good job of staying lower than his blockers. Takes the body and wraps up as a tackler. Capable of hitting with some pop.
Intangibles: B
Above average instincts and does not get fooled by play-action and read-option handoffs. Can be a bit late off the snap at times. Played primarily as a defensive end, and will need to adjust to playing from a standup position and dropping into coverage, and has limited experience in these areas. Has a good motor and is not averse to chasing the play.
Red Flags: Level of Competition, Size, Project
Bottom Line: Zack Hodges is an impressive prospect considering that he comes out of the Ivy League. He has the athleticism and football temperament to become an NFL regular. However, Hodges is not without risk, as he will have to learn to play as a standup rusher in a limited amount of time for a team to consider drafting him, and paying him beyond his rookie deal. Likely role will be a as a pass rush specialist in the NFL.
