Padres acquire C Derek Norris from Oakland Athletics
Club also acquires Minor League right-handed pitcher Seth Streich
SAN DIEGO – The San Diego Padres today announced that they have acquired catcher Derek Norris and right-handed pitcher Seth Streich as well as international bonus compensation from the Oakland Athletics in exchange for right-handed pitchers Jesse Hahn and R.J. Alvarez. Executive Vice President/General Manager A.J. Preller made the announcement.
Norris, 25, set career-highs in nearly every offensive category for the Athletics in 2014, including batting average (.270), on-base percentage (.361), runs (46), hits (104), doubles (19), home runs (10), RBI (55) and walks (54), en route to being named to his first American League All-Star team. Last season, the 6-0, 210 pound backstop ranked second among American League catchers in batting average and on-base percentage while his slugging percentage (.411) ranked third. A native of Goddard, Kansas, the right-handed hitter owns a lifetime .246 batting average with 43 doubles, two triples, 26 home runs, 119 RBI and 106 runs scored in 285 career games over parts of three Major League seasons, all with Oakland. The fourth-round draft choice of the Washington Nationals in 2007, Norris was acquired by the Athletics in a six-player deal on December 23, 2011 that sent LHP Gio Gonzalez to Washington.
Streich, 23, (pronounced “strike”) posted a 9-6 record with a 3.16 ERA (40 ER, 114.0 IP) and 116 strikeouts against 22 walks in 22 games, all starts, for Single-A Stockton in 2014. The sixth-round draft choice of the Athletics in the 2012 draft out of Ohio University, the right-hander posted the seventh-best strikeouts/walks ratio (5.27) in all of Single-A baseball and the 11th-highest in all of Minor League Baseball last season. A native of Johnsonburg, Pennsylvania, the 6-3, 210 pound right-hander has pitched to a 23-13 record with a 3.37 ERA (98 ER, 262.0 IP) and 246 strikeouts against 81 walks in 60 games, 47 starts, in parts of three minor league seasons.
Hahn, 25, split the 2014 season between Double-A San Antonio and San Diego, posting a 2-1 record with a 1.91 ERA (9 ER, 42.1 IP) and 38 strikeouts against 15 walks in 13 games, 10 starts, for the Missions as well as a 7-4 mark with a 3.07 ERA (25 ER, 73.1 IP) and 70 strikeouts against 32 walks in 14 games, 12 starts, for the Padres in what was his first Major League stint. The 6-5, 190 pound right-hander owns a career 6-4 record with a 2.26 ERA and 160 strikeouts against 48 walks in 47 games, 44 starts, over parts of three minor league seasons.
Alvarez, 23, joined the Padres system on July 21 of last season in the trade that sent RHP Huston Street to the Los Angeles Angels. The 6-1, 200 pound right-handed pitcher went 0-1 with a 2.76 ERA (5 ER, 16.1 IP) and 23 strikeouts against three walks in 17 games out of the bullpen for the Missions. The Florida Atlantic University product made his first Major League stints with the Padres in September, going 0-0 with a 1.13 ERA (1 ER, 8.0 IP) and nine strikeouts against five walks in three appearances.
