Arm: C+
Arm is good, not great. Can push the ball 55 yards downfield. Does not throw with elite velocity, but can get the ball where it needs to be in enough time. Has a high, over the top delivery that doesn’t raise much cause for concern.
Accuracy: B+
One of the better throwers in this class in terms of accuracy. Has very good ball placement and excellent touch on his throws. Deep ball accuracy is best in class and is his best asset as a quarterback. Was unable to set his feet very often due to the line play in front of him, but did so when given time.
Athleticism: F
Has a big frame and is unathletic. Suffered from horrible offensive line play and was routinely under fire and unable to elude pressure. Can rollout, but is inaccurate while on the move. Rarely takes off to run and most of his rushing attempts and yards are via sacks.
Mental: B-
Played in Mike Reilly’s pro-style offense which has produced Sean Canfield, Matt Moore, and Derek Anderson in recent years. Uses the entire field and can go through his progressions. May need to speed up his processing as he can take a little too long to get rid of the ball and bird-dog his target. Will need to cut down on the amount of turnovers, which he has begun to do in 2014.
Intangibles: B+
A four year starter who posted record-breaking numbers in 2013, but took a step back after the loss of WR Brandin Cooks. Has outstanding football character and has the traits of a successful NFL quarterback. Is tough and fairly durable with the frame to withstand punishment.
Red Flags: None
Bottom Line: While Sean Mannion might be better suited to a bygone era of NFL quarterbacks, he presents an interesting project to teams. While Mannion struggled at times as a senior and having little time to throw the ball, he has all the tools from the arm up to be an NFL passer. Mannion will need to undo some bad habits, like throwing without setting his feet, but ultimately he can start for a team that likes to throw the ball downfield and has a strong o-line.
