Alejandro Del Rey is Spain's new golden boy of golf
January 29, 2025 By  Golf

The Rise of Spain’s Next Golfing Star

Alejandro Del Rey won his first-ever DP World Tour title with a comprehensive four-shot victory at the Ras Al Khaimah Championship. The Spaniard cemented his rising reputation as one of golf’s finest by finishing four shots ahead of Marcus Armitage on Sunday, January 26, 2025.

Early Career and Breakthrough For Del Rey

Born in Madrid, Spain, Del Rey became a professional in 2020 and his stock has been on the rise ever since. He announced himself on the big stage in September 2020 when he won the Open Mirabelle d’Or on the Alps Tour in France. Although Del Rey’s name is not yet mentioned in the same breath as Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods, the 26-year-old’s performances have put him on track to become one of golf’s next big stars.

Making History on the Swiss Challenge Tour

Del Rey gained international recognition in 2021 when he made history by shooting a 58-round score at the Swiss Challenge Tour–the lowest-ever round in a major European golf tour. This record breaking performance marked a turning point in his career and put him under the global spotlight.

The Rise and Rise of Spain’s Golden Boy

Del Rey followed his world record in 2021 by securing the German Challenge title in 2022. The rising star also finished 22nd on the road to Mallorca rankings, narrowly missing out on an European Tour card. However, Del Rey didn’t let the disappointment of missing out on an European Tour card overwhelm him, instead he put in strong performances at Qualifying School to eventually earn his European Tour card. The following year, he finished joint-third at the first edition of Singapore Classic after joining the European Tour. The Madrid-born golfer continued his impressive form into the 2024 season, finishing joint-fifth at the Investec South African Open Championship and securing a seventh-place finish at the Alfred Dunhill Championship.

Del Rey Heralding a New Generation of Golf Stars

With his victory at the Ras Al Khaimah Championship, Del Rey has proved he can compete with the best and win on the biggest stage. After a strong start to 2025, he will hope to follow in the footsteps of fellow Spaniard, Jon Rahm who won the 2021 U.S. Open and the 2023 Masters Tournament by adding more titles to his cabinet.

There is no doubt that the sky is the limit for Alejandro Del Rey. He has the tenacity and experience to compete with the best golfers on the biggest stages and has been tipped by many to become one of the best golfers in the world in the near future. Del Rey also sees himself as an inspiration to younger Spanish golfers climbing the ranks.

Having gone from amateur to professional and winning his first DP World Tour title in less than six years, it would be hard for anyone to bet against him reaching his full potential and securing Spain’s place in the history books of European and world golf.
