Ridley will be competing with three other running backs who are looking to win the backup job. Robert Turbin, Jordan Todman and rookie Josh Ferguson will all be vying to be Gore’s backup.. Turbin seems to be the leading candidate for the spot as of now. The former Seattle Seahawks, Dallas Cowboys and Cleveland Browns running back rushed for 199 yards and one touchdown in 10 games in 2015.

Ridley rushed for 1,263 yards in 2012 with the New England Patriots. In the AFC Championship game against the Baltimore Ravens, Ridley suffered a concussion after taking a hard hit from Bernard Pierce. The hit caused him to fumble the ball, which Ravens recovered. Baltimore won the game by a final score of 38-13 en route to their second Super Bowl title.

Since that hit, Ridley has rushed for just 1,203 yards in the last three seasons combined. He also suffered a knee injury in the 2014 season.

In 2015, Ridley was signed by the Patriots AFC East rival in the New York Jets. He rushed for just 90 yards on 36 carries with gang green. The Detroit Lions signed Ridley to a one-year deal back on April 1.

After very little playing time with Detroit in their first two preseason games, however, the team let him go. The Colts signing Ridley and having him on their first team Week 1 would be a big example of irony. The Colts play the Lions Week 1 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

The Patriots selected Ridley in the third round (73rd overall) in the 2011 NFL Draft out of Louisiana State University (LSU). He rushed for 1,419 yards in three seasons with the Tigers.
