Argos Turnovers Costly in Loss Against Bombers

After all was said and done the Toronto Argonauts offence gave the ball to Winnipeg six times as the Winnipeg Blue Bombers won 34-17 at BMO Field.

Apple Turnovers may or may not have been on the menu at the concessions,6 but the Winnipeg Blue Bombers sure made a lot of turnovers on the field. After all was said and done the Toronto Argonauts offence gave the ball to Winnipeg six times. Despite BMO Field serving as a pseudo sauna, the Bombers bested the Argos in Toronto conquering the heat in addition to the Boatmen. The victory means Winnipeg has earned their third straight win and move to .500 with a 4-4 record after starting the season 1-4.

The Bombers defence might have carried the team to victory in this game all by themselves if the offence were to have had an off night, which they did not. Winnipeg picked off new starter Logan Kilgore five times in the game, returning one 98-yards for a touchdown, and had a fumble recovery. Winnipeg took this this Week 8 match-up by a final score of 34-17.

Argos Turnovers Costly in Loss Against Bombers

Boatmen Start off Good

The game kicked off with a quick two and out courtesy of the Argos defence and from there, Toronto kept the Blue and Gold in check for the majority of the first half, sniffing out runs and rallying to the ball on short passes for tackles. The first score of the game was a 32-yard field goal from Toronto’s Lirim Hajrullahu with 7:04 left in the first quarter. After Justin Medlock scored a field goal for Winnipeg the Argos responded quickly with 62-yard touchdown strike to Diontae Spencer in his first game back from injury. Spencer blew past the Bombers secondary and gave the Argos a 10-3 lead after the first quarter.

Bombers Domination in the Trenches

After the first quarter the rest of the game was pretty much all Winnipeg. Matt Nichols and company did a number on the Argos defence. Winnipeg’s offensive line was a big part of that, and the Bombers didn’t give up a sack during the game, consistently opening up holes for Andrew Harris on the ground and Nichols never seemed to feel any pressure from Toronto’s rushers. The Argos defence looked to be in good shape in the first half but it didn’t carry over into the second.

Fogg Everywhere

Despite the heat warning at BMO Field the meteorologists overlooked the Fogg that was covering the turf. Bombers defensive back Kevin Fogg had two interceptions, a quarterback sack and recovered the Kenny Shaw fumble. Fogg had an individual performance for the ages leading Winnipeg’s ball hawk secondary to stardom.

The Dagger Through the Air

With all the time and field position he could ever need, Nichols completed 17 passes for 248 yards and 2 touchdowns along with 1 interception. Seven of those passes went to Clarence Denmark, who had two touchdowns and 195-yards receiving in an outstanding individual performance. Since replacing original starter Drew Willy with Nichols, the Bombers offence has scored at least 30 points in each of their three wins.

Andrew Harris Unleashed

For those who think the CFL is a passing league Harris proves otherwise. Harris was pretty much unstoppable as the game went on. The Winnipeg native carried the ball a total of 19 times gashing the Argos defence for 6.5 yards per carry and a touchdown.

The former B.C. Lion has been a great addition by the Bombers this year. Through eight games he has rushed for 505 yards, 3 touchdowns and is on pace for his first back to back 1,000 yards rushing season.

Dropping the Ball

Kilgore had 26 completions on 44 passes for 303 yards, 1 touchdown and of course five interceptions. The offensive woes weren’t completely at the fault of Kilgore. Football is considered the ultimate team sport and the team needs twelve players to do their job every single play for a team to have any sustainable success in a game and season. The Argos offence had enough untimely drops to make a Skrillex song against the Bombers. It seemed as though every time the Argos offence was gaining momentum a dropped ball would negate a play that would have given the Double Blue and the crowd a big surge.

Knocked out Swinging

Despite the game clearly not going the Argos way they weren’t going to go down lightly. Kilgore, even in the face of pressure, showed his athleticism and brains escaping rushers to throw a few hard completions. One of the bright spots in the game for the Argos was backup quarterback Cody Fajardo. The Argos on 3rd & 2 from their own ten-yard line, pulled off a punt fake utilizing Fajardo’s speed as he rushed for 13 yards and a first down extending a late game drive. Later in the game Fajardo orchestrated a drive which was capped off when he threw a 34-yard pass to Argos rookie Llevi Noel for his first career CFL touchdown bringing the game to 34-17.

Quick Turn Around

Toronto will remain at home in Week 9 for the second of three straight home games in August playing the Edmonton Eskimos. A short memory will be key after the disappointment suffered in Week 8. Edmonton is coming off a win against the Montreal Alouettes that gave them their third victory of the year and a record of 3-4 overall.

Winnipeg, after three straight wins, will have a bye in Week 9 before returning to action in Week 10 against Montreal.
