Shane Doan Re-Signs With Arizona

Right Wing Shane Doan signed a one-year, $5 million contract with the Arizona Coyotes. Doan has been a part of the Coyotes franchise his entire NHL career. When he was drafted by the Winnipeg Jets, the franchise moved to Phoenix the following year and became the Phoenix Coyotes.

Shane Doan Re-Signs With Arizona

The Jets drafted Shane Doan in the first round of the 1995 NHL Entry Draft. The seventh overall selection, made a smooth transition into the NHL recording 17 points in his rookie season.

Although Doan’s points did not improve vastly until the 1999-2000 season, he showed us that he was only getting better every passing season. In the 1999-2000 season, he scored 26 goals and 25 assists. This was an immense improvement from his 6 goals and 16 assists in the 1998-99 season. Following this season, he consecutively scored more than 20 goals until the 2009-10 season where he recorded just under that with 18 goals.

In 2003-04 Doan became the captain of the Coyotes after the departure of Teppo Numminen, and has held this position ever since. During this season, he recorded 27 goals and 41 assists. In 2004, he was granted the opportunity to play in his first NHL All-Star Game.

After a 5-year contract extension with the Coyotes for $22.75 million in 2007, he continued to show what a strong asset he was for this team with 28 goals and 50 assists in the 2007-08 season. In 2009, another opportunity came for him to play in the NHL All-Star Game. He defeated Marc Savard to win the elimination shootout of the skills competition. The 2008-09 season ended on a high note with Doan scoring a career-high 31 goals.

Success in the Desert

In the 2011-12 season, Doan led his team to their most successful regular season thus far, with a third place finish in the Western Conference and their first division title. He racked up 50 points, his first NHL hat trick, and led his team to defeat both the Chicago Blackhawks and the Nashville Predators in the first two rounds of the playoffs. Unfortunately, they would fall to the Los Angeles Kings, who went on to win the cup that year.

Doan signed his last deal with the Coyotes in 2012 for $21.2 million. In 2015, he became the all time leading goal scorer for the Winnipeg/Phoenix/Arizona franchise with 381 goals. Today, he is the last player to still be playing in the NHL that is from the original Winnipeg Jets.

Career Accomplishments

Doan has appeared in 1,466 NHL games with 396 goals and 549 assists. He has also seen success as a part of Team Canada in 1999, 2003, 2005, 2007 where he was named captain, and in 2008 and 2009. He won two golds and three silvers in this time. He has won the King Clancy Memorial Trophy in 2010 and the Mark Messier Leadership Award in 2012.
