Redblacks Running Back Depth Chart

Ottawa Redblacks running back depth chart heading into the 2016 Canadian Football League season from training camp. Who is their number one guy?

With pre-season games in the CFL being just days away from starting, Last Word on Sports will do another breakdown on some of the rosters from training camp. Today, the Ottawa Redblacks running back and full back depth chart will be analyzed.

Ottawa Redblacks: Running Back Depth Chart

William Powell

After losing Jeremiah Johnson to injury last season, and then losing him in free agency to the B.C. Lions, the Redblacks needed a starting running back. William Powell is the guy for the job. Powell proved himself by providing about the same amount of yardage as Johnson in 21 less carries. Johnson had 448 yards and nine touchdowns on 97 carries in ten games. Powell had 447 yards and two touchdowns on 76 carries in seven games in 2016. The Redblacks kept Powell to be their starter and he could have a big season with his speed and skill set.

Kienan Lafrance

Lafrance was selected by the Redblacks in the six round, 46th overall in the 2015 CFL Draft. Despite the fact he has not played a snap in the league yet, the Redblacks are more than content going into the 2016 season with him as the backup running back. We may not have seen what Lafrance is like in the CFL yet, but we have seen him at the college level with satisfying stats. He had 765 rushing yards and seven rushing touchdowns with Manitoba. He has also proven he can be a threat in the receiving core in the college level, with 259 yards and 26 catches. There is plenty of potential in him and a good option to fit behind Powell.

Brendan Gillanders is also worth mentioning for some possible rushing carries. The Ottawa native was picked up by the Redblacks in free agency. Although he is generally a fullback and didn’t get much playing time with the Argonauts last season, he is a potential option for a few carries as well, just in case. He is solid depth signing for Ottawa.
