Colorado Rapids sign 2016 MLS SuperDraft pick Dennis Castillo

Costa Rican defender was selected in the second round (37th overall) of the SuperDraft

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (Tuesday, April 22, 2016) – Colorado Rapids announced today that the club has signed 2016 MLS SuperDraft pick Dennis Castillo (37th overall) out of Virginia Commonwealth University.

“Dennis is a young defender with good technique and a great attitude,” said Paul Bravo, VP of Soccer Operations and Technical Director. “He has all the fundamentals to go far in the game and we’re happy to officially add him to our squad.”

Castillo, 22, was named the 2015 Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Year and was a four-year starter for the Rams, starting all 80 games he saw action in, a school record. The San Jose, Costa Rica native scored 17 collegiate goals and notched two assists which also earned him NSCAA Second Team All-Midwest Region, Atlantic 10 Championship Player and Atlantic 10 First Team All-Conference. Castillo has also represented the Costa Rica national team at the U-18 and U-20 levels.

Castillo will be added to the roster as an international player and will be available for selection this weekend.

The Rapids have begun the season with a 4-2-1 record (13 points) and sit third in the Supporters’ Shield standings.
