Eagles Acquire Second Overall Pick From Browns

Eagles acquire second overall pick from Browns in a blockbuster trade that changes many teams' draft boards and changes the futures of both teams.

Less than a week after it was announced that the first overall pick had been traded from the Titans to the Rams, the second overall pick has been traded from the Browns to the Eagles.  The Eagles also received a 2017 fourth round draft pick.  The Browns received this year’s eighth overall pick, the 77th overall pick, the 100th overall pick, the Eagles’ 2017 first round pick and the Eagles’ 2018 second round pick.

For the Eagles, this trade likely means that they are targeting whichever quarterback out of Jared Goff and Carson Wentz will be left after the Rams pick the quarterback they prefer the most.  The Eagles had re-signed Sam Bradford to a two-year deal earlier this offseason worth up to $35 million. They also signed Chase Daniel to a three-year deal worth up to $21 million. If the Eagles do in fact take a quarterback with the second overall selection, they could very well have over $70 million dedicated to three quarterbacks based off the value of last year’s second overall pick quarterback’s contract (Marcus Mariota signed a four year, $24 million contract last offseason).  This also means that they need to hit on this selection since they are without a pick in round two this year and only the one round three pick at 79 overall.

For the Browns, this gives them six of the top 100 picks in this draft and sets them up with two first round selections for the next draft and two second round selections in 2018.  This in all likelihood takes the Browns out of the race for the top two quarterbacks in this draft.  What this means is that they either need to believe in the quarterbacks they have on the roster in Robert Griffin III and Josh McCown, or it puts them into the running to select one of the second tier of quarterbacks available in this draft in Paxton Lynch or Connor Cook.

The Eagles have now sold their future in hopes that whoever will be available second overall will be the guy to take them over the top. Meanwhile, the Browns have given themselves more chances to pick enough players to set the team up very well for the future as they now have six out of the top 100 in this draft and have twelve picks overall in this draft.
