MLS Pick ‘Em 2016 – Week 4 – Red Bull New York v. New England Revolution

Last week’s snoozer in DC saw United draw the Rapids. Only one of our experts predicted a draw, and he hit the score on the head. Take a bow Eric Walcott, now pulling away with the points. Here’s how our standings look after three weeks. Still a large number of experts waiting to get points.

Player Points Correct Outcome Incorrect Correct Score
Eric Walcott 6 2 1 2
Matt Pollard 3 1 2 1
Joseph Goldstein 1 1 2 0
Alec Rivera 1 1 2 0
Joe Hojnacki 1 1 2 0
Russ McKenzie 0 0 3 0
Ned Joyce 0 0 3 0
Daniel Sperry 0 0 3 0
Laura McFayden 0 0 3 0

This week, the Red Bulls travel to New England to take on the Revs. Both teams have had struggles so far this season. The Red Bulls backline has been completely decimated by injury while their offense suddenly exploded last week after getting shutout the first two games of the season. New England is a team still searching for their first win as they look to gel after some offseason acquisitions looked to strengthen last year’s squad. Will the Red Bulls surprise the Revs and win in Gillette Stadium for the second time in a decade, or will New England continue their home dominance over the Red Bulls? Let’s see what the experts think.

Red Bulls are paper thin at the back. The Revs have been having trouble on both side of the ball, but a home game against a conference rival that almost never wins at New England is just what the doctor ordered.

The Revs will probably pick up a red card again, continuing to derail their season because of an unfortunate combination of poor discipline and bad calls. New York is a good team, they’ll start to show that.

Alec Rivera

New York’s offense appears to be coming online after starting 2016 in Safe Mode. The Revs proved they can take it to teams regardless of venue, but there are serious temperament concerns. As the cards start to accumulate for Jay Heaps’s men, so will New York’s shot count. Revs score first, but New York comes from behind to win for the second consecutive match.

Incidentally, the Red Bulls ailing backline and the loss of Gonzalo Veron have ignited the provrebial fire down below in New York. The ailing backline also means goals. BWP get two, Agudelo gets one. Red Bulls get 3 points.

The Revs new favorite thing is shooting themselves in the foot then tying games. The Red Bulls of 2016 are not a good team, at least not yet. Revs will let in a bad goal but will manage yet another tie

Matt Pollard

The Revs get lucky at home and finally get off the snide. The Red Bulls clearly have some issues in the defense and the Revs are able to exploit them just enough to get the win.

2-0 RBNY. I think Jesse Marsch get’s them up for their first big Derby of 2016. This team still has all the quality they did from last season, and they started out pretty slow then too. The comeback against Houston shows that RBNY is back in full swing and they’ll handle New England well. BWP get’s a brace as New York bags its second win of the season.

DRAW (1-1)

The Revs looked solid with ten men against NYC last week and the Red Bulls haven’t exactly been able to score a lot before two weeks ago. As long as the Revs avoid another costly red card, I see them scratching out a result at home here.

In a battle of struggling defensive discipline, we’ll see a lot of errors and a few yellow cards. The game will look like it’ll end in a 1-1 draw, but New York will earn late winner and their confidence will increase.
