The Kansas City Chiefs will lose a third round draft pick in this year’s draft as well as a sixth rounder in 2017. This is due to anti-tampering rules when it came to the Chiefs picking up Jeremy Maclin during last year’s free agency period. Kansas City is also fined $250K for contacting Jeremy Maclin before Free Agency period started. It was found that the Chiefs made improper contact to Maclin during the “Negotiating Period” in 2015 while Maclin was still under contract with the Philadelphia Eagles. Chiefs coach Andy Reid was also Maclin’s coach whenever Reid coached for the Eagles.
Maclin signed a 5 year, $55,000,000 with Kansas City which included a $12 Million dollar signing bonus and $22.5 million guaranteed. This would be an average salary of $11 million a year. Jeremy Maclin had a solid year in 2014 with the Philadelphia Eagles racking up 1,329 receiving yards for 10 touchdowns. This lead to him signing with the Chiefs and having a solid year as well in 2015 with 1,088 receiving yards and 8 touchdowns. There were thought to be many factors that brought him to Kansas City like his former coach in Philly coaching for the Chiefs, as well as close to the college he attended, University of Missouri, and his former college quarterback also playing for the Chiefs.
The Chiefs have already announced plans to appeal the fine and try to get their draft picks back. Kansas City usually do well in the 3rd round of the draft. Drafting notable Chiefs stars Jamaal Charles, Travis Kelce, and Justin Houston. Just last season they drafted Chris Conley in the third round and are hoping for him to fill in as their number two receiver. On top of the draft picks the Chiefs are fined $250,000, Coach Reid fined $75K and GM John Dorsey fined $25K.
