Report: Kevin Martin to sign with San Antonio Spurs

After being brought out by the Minnesota Timberwolves, Kevin Martin has agreed to sign a deal with the San Antonio Spurs.

Martin was not the greatest fit for the Timberwolves. There was simply no need for him to be there. He was an aging and redundant piece that did not fit with where Minnesota is going. They are in a rebuilding process and while Martin can still produce for contenders on a consistent basis, he was not an ideal fit with the young team. Martin has been a scorer throughout his career, and has averaged 20 points per game in the past. He likely will not get the minutes to put up those kinds of numbers, but he will add scoring depth to a Spurs team who are already full of scoring ability. Martin’s shooting and ability to create his own shot will help the Spurs with added production off the bench, adding another player to the great Spurs system. Obviously, Martin’s scoring will not be needed as much at has been on his previous stops in the NBA, but it will still be a value to the Spurs team in certain situations. It will be interesting to see how head coach Gregg Poppovich integrates Martin into the system.

Not only did the Spurs add Martin, but they also added former Timberwolves guard Andre Miller to the roster a few days ago. These players are respected veterans who will be expected to play roles for the Spurs down the stretch and into the playoffs. In moving from a rebuilding team to a contender, there is an extra motivation for Martin and Miller.

With the acquisition of Martin, the Spurs are set to waive and release Rasual Butler. At this point, the Spurs have already clinched a playoff birth. They are having one of the greatest regular seasons of all time, overshadowed only by the legendary season happening in Golden State. With these pickups they are attempting to add the depth necessary to try and dethrone the Warriors come playoff time.
