Arsenal on Loan: Yaya Sanogo's Debut for Charlton

Yaya Sanogo's debut for Charlton was the headline this week, with the striker making his first appearance after being cast to the sidelines at Ajax.

This season Last Word on Sports will be keeping you up to date on the Arsenal players out on loan, as they continue to develop their skills and prove they are ready to compete for a place in the Arsenal side.

The players away on loan are:

  • Wojciech Szczesny (GK), on loan to AS Roma in Serie A
  • Yaya Sanogo (ST), on loan to Charlton Athletic in the Championship
  • Ainsley Maitland-Niles (MID), on loan to Ipswich Town in the Championship
  • Isaac Hayden (CB/MID), on loan to Hull City in the Championship
  • Chuba Akpom (ST), on loan to Hull City in the Championship
  • Jon Toral (MID), on loan to Birmingham City in the Championship
  • Emiliano Martinez (GK), on loan to Wolves in the Championship
  • Wellington Silva (MID), on loan to Bolton in the Championship
  • Gedion Zelalem (MID), on loan to Rangers in the Scottish Championship
  • Glen Kamara (MID), on loan to Southend United in League One
  • Mathieu Debuchy (RB), on loan to Bordeaux in Ligue 1

Wojciech Szczesny played 90 minutes in Roma’s 3-1 win over Carpi. Carpi managed only two shots on target in a game which Roma dominated the ball, holding 73 percent of possession.

Yaya Sanogo made his debut for Charlton, coming off the bench in the 73rd minute of Charlton’s 0-0 draw with Cardiff City. It was Sanogo’s first appearance after having his loan at Ajax terminated. Sanogo’s debut was far from a shining debut, as he completed only 50 percent of his passes in the attacking half and failed to attempt even a shot. Still, simply  being on the pitch in a competitive match represents progress for the Arsenal man, who was left out for months while at Ajax.

Charlton manager José Riga told lastwordonsports’ Hugo Jennings: “He can play with Simon [Makienok]. As you saw today he was bringing something more, that’s why we were able to put the pressure on Cardiff at the end of the game.”

Ainsley Maitland-Niles started and went 53 minutes as Ipswich fell 2-1 to Bristol City. The Arsenal man was not bad on the day, but failed to impress and was removed shortly after the break.

Isaac Hayden did not play in Hull’s 2-0 win over Blackburn. Team-mate Chuba Akpom came on as a 76th minute substitute.

Jon Toral started and played 82 minutes of Birmingham’s 0-0 draw with Rotherham United. It was a mixed day for Toral, who set up two quality chances with passes from the midfield into the box, but turned the ball over too often, and failed to make a real impact.

Emiliano Martinez was again an unused substitute in Wolves’ 2-1 loss to Preston North End. After a run of games early in the season, Martinez has been relegated to the bench in recent weeks, not having played in the league since November 7th.

Gedion Zelalaem was an unused substitute in Rangers 1-1 draw against Alloa Athletic.

Glen Kamara made his first start for Southend United as they fell 1-0 to Scunthorpe. Kamara played 51 minutes in the loss.

Mathieu Debuchy played the full 90 minutes as Bordeaux defeated Guingamp 4-2 over the weekend. The win will have been a relief for Debuchy and Bordeaux, who experienced heavy defeats in both of Debuchy’s first two appearances at the club.
