OTPP: Phaneuf Trade, Byfuglien Contract, and NHL Trade Deadline Targets

Last Word on Sports is proud to present their hockey podcast, On the Powerplay with Ben and Dave. Join Ben Kerr and Dave Gove each week as they take a look around the Hockey World focusing on the big issues of the NHL and elsewhere.

Editors Note: We apologize for the technical difficulties concerning Dave’s feed this week, and will work to fix them next week.

We are happy to welcome Kevin McGran (@Kevin_McGran) from the Toronto Star, as he helps us break down the biggest news in the hockey world this week (and maybe this year).  That’s right, the Toronto Maple Leafs and Ottawa Senators conspired on a nine-player transaction that will be forever be known as the second Dion Phaneuf trade.  Where is the value in this deal for the Toronto Maple Leafs?  Who is Tobias Lindberg and why did the Leafs want him? Could they flip Cowen, Greening, or Mihalek in subsequent moves? Why are there so many contracts and players involved?  Who are the next Leafs on their way out of Toronto?  McGran breaks this all down for us.

Dave and Ben also look at the deal from Ottawa’s point of view. How will Phaneuf do in Ottawa? How does he fit into a lineup where Erik Karlsson is the clear number one defenceman? What are the Sens next moves prior to the trade deadline? Can Ottawa make the playoffs?

The boys also look at Dustin Byfuglien’s new deal in Winnipeg.  What does it mean for the Jets going forward? Why did Byfuglien decide to stay in Manitoba? How does this deal effect the negotiations between the Jets and team captain Andrew Ladd?

Dave gloats about the Los Angeles Kings big win over the Boston Bruins on Tuesday in Milan Lucic’s return to Boston.  How many zeros did Lucic put on the board to get the Kings to come out and fire 57 shots, and score nine goals in the Bruins net?

Ben and Dave then look ahead to the NHL trade deadline.  What happens with Dan Hamhuis, Eric Staal, Cam Ward, Jiri Hudler, Teddy Purcell, Loui Eriksson, Kris Russell, Mikkel Boedker, Jonathan Drouin, Steven Stamkos, and others between now and February 29th?
