Chicago White Sox Sign Mat Latos

Sources have confirmed that Mat Latos has signed with the Chicago White Sox.

MLB.com is reporting that the Chicago White Sox have agreed to a one-year, $3 million deal with RHP Mat Latos. The White Sox have not confirmed the deal, which is pending a physical.

Earlier in his career, Latos was a very successful starting pitcher in his time with both the San Diego Padres and the Cincinnati Reds.

Latos was drafted by the Padres in the 2006 draft, and was selected in the 11th round (333rd overall). In his three years with the Padres, Latos was a solid starting pitcher who posted a 3.37 ERA, with a 1.154 WHIP and a 3.04 SO/W ratio.  Latos continued to be a great starter after he was traded to Cincinnati in 2012 in exchange for Yonder Alonso, Yasmani Grandal, and Brad Boxberger and Edinson Volquez. In his three seasons with the Reds, Latos earned a 33-16 record, with a 3.31 ERA, 1.179 WHIP with 446 strikeouts.

After suffering from nagging injuries that limited his playing time, Latos was traded to the Miami Marlins in 2015. Latos struggled mightily in south Florida, going 4-7 with a 4.48 ERA.  In late July of the 2015 season, Latos was involved in a three-team trade that sent him to the Los Angeles Dodgers.  But Latos fared little better with the Dodgers, going 0-3, with a 6.66 ERA in six appearances.  Latos finished 2015 by signing a deal with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim that would allow him to pitch the last week of the season with the Angels, though he would not eligible to pitch in the postseason.

Latos now joins the White Sox with a career 64-55 record and a 3.51 ERA.
