Astros Sign Doug Fister; Bolster SP Depth

As we inch closer to Spring Training 2016, another top free agent has come off the board. On Thursday the Houston Astros announced that they have agreed to terms with 32 year-old starting pitcher, Doug Fister. The deal is reportedly worth $7 million but could reach up to $12 million with bonuses according to Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish.

Throughout his career, Fister has been one of the more reliable starting pitchers in the league, posting a 65-63 record, with a 3.42 ERA and 732 strikeouts in 1085.2 innings pitched. Fister has also recorded an ERA+ of 117 for his career, where 100 is considered the league average (the higher the better). Last year, the California native seemingly regressed, with a career worst 4.19 ERA in 15 starts for the Washington Nationals. Fister was then relegated to the bullpen in August, despite only four career relief appearances prior.

As reported by Jeff Passan, Fister entered the 2015 campaign with a chance to score a major free agent deal in the $100 million range. After a poor showing in 2015, 2016 will be a much needed and potentially final chance to rebuild value. Fister now joins a rotation that includes 2015 AL Cy Young award winner Dallas Keuchel, Collin McHugh, Lance McCullers and Scott Feldman. The Astros also will have Mike Fiers and Brad Peacock competing alongside Fister for the fifth spot in the starting rotation.
