Victor Cabrera Signs Long-Term Deal with Impact

The Montreal Impact announced a long-term deal has been reached with defender Victor Cabrera, after he spent the 2015 season on loan with the club.

After weeks a speculation regarding defender Victor Cabrera, the Montreal Impact announced a long-term deal has been reached with the Argentine defender, after he spent the 2015 season on loan, from River Plate, with the club.

Cabrera was solid on the backline last season, playing alongside MLS Defender of the Year Laurent Ciman. After his questionable start in North America, which included many games that he would need subbing out to due fatigue, Cabrera was key in the team’s run to the Eastern Conference Semi-Final. With thin depth on the defence, the Impact is happy to have the 22-year-old back and set to play for the club long-term.

The following is a press release from the Montreal Impact.

MONTREAL – The Montreal Impact announced on Saturday that Argentine defender Victor Cabrera has signed a long-term contract with the club after completing his transfer from River Plate. As per MLS policy, details of the deal were not disclosed.

In the event of a future transfer for Cabrera, the Argentine club will receive a percentage of the transfer fee.

“We are really happy to bring Victor Cabrera back,” said Impact technical director Adam Braz. “He was able to integrate quickly with the team and played an important and consistent role in the team’s success in both Champions league and MLS.”

In his first season with the Impact, Cabrera, 22, played 21 regular season games in MLS, including 20 starts and 1,730 minutes. He was named to the MLSSoccer.com Team of the Week on two occasions, for weeks 28 and 33, and once as the Videotron Mobile Player of the Game. He also appeared in one Amway Canadian Championship game.

He also helped the team reach the CONCACAF Champions League Final against Mexican giants Club América, recording one goal and one assist in four starts in the knockout stage. He scored his first goal with the Impact in the first leg of the semifinals against L.D. Alajuelense at Olympic Stadium.

Developed by River Plate’s Academy, he was a member of the renowned Argentine first division club for his first two seasons as a professional (winter championship 2013/2014 and fall championship 2014/2015).
