Andrew Ference out for the Year Following Hip Surgery

The Oilers announced on Thursday morning that defenceman Andrew Ference will be out for the season after undergoing hip surgery. Ference has been on injured reserve for the majority of the season due to the nagging hip injury.

The 36-year-old Andrew Ference has only played six games this season. He has not scored any points, but picked up six minutes in penalties and is a minus-4.  The stay at home defender has played 907 regular-season NHL games with the Pittsburgh Penguins,Calgary Flames, Boston Bruins and Oilers.  He has picked up 43 goals and 182 assists for 225 points in 907 career NHL games.  Ference won a Stanley Cup with the Boston Bruins in 2011.

Andrew Ference is in the third year of a four year deal he signed with the Oilers as an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2013.  The contract carries a cap hit of $3.25 million per season.

Ference was named captain in 2013 after signing with the Oilers as a free agent.  In recognition of his diminished role with the team, he gave up the “C” and became an alternate captain this season, with other “As” going to Taylor Hall, Jordan Eberle, and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins.
