Miami Hires Former UGA Tailback Thomas Brown

Former Georgia player and coach Thomas Brown will be joining newly named Miami head coach Mark Richt's staff according to a report.

University of Georgia running backs coach Thomas Brown will join Mark Richt’s staff in Miami per a report from DawgNation.com’s Sam Emerson.

A Look at Thomas Brown’s Career

Brown played for Richt at Georgia from 2004-2007, gaining freshman All-SEC honors in 2004. He was drafted in the sixth round of the NFL draft by the Atlanta Falcons in 2008 and last played for the Cleveland Browns in 2010 before moving into coaching.

Since 2012, Brown has coached running backs at Chattanooga, Marshall, Wisconsin, and Georgia.

In his first year at Chattanooga, the Mocs rushing yardage improved from 3.5 yards per carry in 2011 to 4.0 in 2012, while also upping their rushing yards per game by 20 yards from 140 to 160. While at Wisconsin and Georgia in 2014 and 2015 respectively, Brown coached Melvin Gordon into a first round pick in this year’s draft, as well as turned Nick Chubb into a Heisman contender prior to his ACL injury.

The Hurricanes have a stable of running backs returning next season in Joe Yearby, Mark Walton, and Gus Edwards who received a medical redshirt after a season ending foot injury during preseason camp. Brown’s full role on the Miami staff hasn’t been confirmed but is expected to be a co-coordinator role.

Whatever his role will be, his arrival in Coral Gables will bode well for the Hurricanes backfield with the amount of talent it boasts.

Brown previously stated his intentions to remain on the Georgia staff, but per the DawgNation.com report, Brown’s name is not listed on the press release listing assistants for next season. Brown will join Todd Hartley, the Bulldogs former director of player personnel and current Miami special teams coordinator on Richt’s staff.
