After the Anthem #7: 2015 MLS Re-Entry Draft Preview and Canada’s 2026 World Cup Bid

Happy holidays (and draft season) to all!

After the Anthem, the quintessential Canadian soccer podcast, starts off this week with reactions following the 2015 MLS Cup and a discussion on whether a small market cup is a good thing for the league.

Next up, hosts Mitch and Nort go through each Canadian MLS team and evaluate which players could be of interest from the 2015 MLS Re-Entry Draft and first-ever(!) free agent classes.

Following that, the boys share their thoughts on a dearth of Canadian players in MLS. Like “The Soccer Don,” they try and figure out what can be done to get better representation from players north of the 49th parallel.

The Canadian Soccer Association’s 2026 FIFA World Cup ambitions seem legitimate, but can the mother of all tournaments work in Canada? At least one host is staying skeptical. As for how it would help Canadian soccer as a whole though? Both agree it would accelerate what has been, and could continue to be, a slow process.

Mitch ends things off with his usual talk about the other Canadian national teams, and says that the women’s under-20 team could already have one foot into the World Cup.

After the Anthem is a joint venture between Waking the Red and Last Word on Sports. The show is hosted by Waking the Red’s Mitchell Tierney (@mitchelltierney), and Last Word on Sports’ Michael Norton (@therealnort) and Arslan Siddiqui (@therealsiddd).
