Arsenal on Loan: Quiet Weekend for Arsenal loanees

It was a quiet weekend for Arsenal loanees, as only five players out on loan made appearances for their clubs, and only three started. Follow along all season as LWOS keeps you up to date on the latest news from Arsenal players out on loan.

This season Last Word on Sports will be keeping you up to date on the Arsenal players out on loan, as they continue to develop their skills and prove they are ready to compete for a place in the Arsenal side.

The players away on loan are:

  • Wojciech Szczesny (GK), on loan to AS Roma in Serie A
  • Carl Jenkinson (RB), on loan to West Ham United in the Premier League
  • Yaya Sanogo (ST), on loan to Ajax in the Eredivisie
  • Serge Gnabry (MID), on loan to West Bromwich Albion in the Premier League
  • Ainsley Maitland-Niles (MID), on loan to Ipswich Town in the Championship
  • Isaac Hayden (CB/MID), on loan to Hull City in the Championship
  • Chuba Akpom (ST), on loan to Hull City in the Championship
  • Jon Toral (MID), on loan to Birmingham City in the Championship
  • Emiliano Martinez (GK), on loan to Wolves in the Championship
  • Wellington Silva (MID), on loan to Bolton in the Championship
  • Gedion Zelalem (MID), on loan to Rangers in the Scottish Championship

It was a quiet weekend for Arsenal loanees, as only five Gunners made appearances. Only two Arsenal loanees tasted victory over the weekend, and neither Yaya Sanogo nor Emiliano Martinez played in their respective teams’ wins.

Wojciech Szczesny returned to the first team for Roma in their 1-1 draw against Torino. Roma looked to be set to earn all three points before Maxi Lopez equalised with a late penalty for Torino. Szczesny, whose reported controversy seems to have blown over, made four saves before the late penalty. His return to the first team is good news both for Roma and Arsenal, both of whom will still be hoping he can take the next step in his development.

Carl Jenkinson came on in the 88th minute of West Ham’s 0-0 draw against Manchester United. It was a rare appearance off the bench for Jenkinson, who has consistently been in the first team for West Ham this season.

Yaya Sanogo did not play in Ajax’s 5-2 victory over Heerenveen.

Serge Gnabry did not play as West Brom drew 1-1 with Tottenham.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles started and played 63 minutes as Ipswich lost 2-0 to Middlesbrough. Maitland-Niles did create three chances, and miraculously, his 68% pass completion was better than most for Ipswich who completed just 62 percent of passes as a team.

Isaac Hayden was an unused substitute as Hull City lost 2-1 to Leeds United. Team-mate Chuba Akpom came on as a 71st minute substitute, but was unable to make the difference for Hull.

Jon Toral started and played the full 90 minutes as Birmingham lost 2-0 to Huddersfield. It was a rare poor performance for Toral, who has been a bright spot for Birmingham and among Arsenal loanees lately. He completed just 53% of his passes and failed to create any chances for team-mates, as Birmingham lost their third straight match. Birmingham now have just one win in their last seven matches.

Emiliano Martinez did not play in Wolves’ 2-1 win over Rotherham.

Wellington Silva did not play in Bolton’s 3-2 loss to Cardiff.

Gedion Zelalem’s Rangers match against Raith Rovers was called off due to weather conditions.
