Arsenal on Loan: Quality Performance from Jon Toral

This week, a quality performance from Jon Toral was the clear highlight, in an otherwise down week for Arsenal loanees.

This season Last Word on Sports will be keeping you up to date on the Arsenal players out on loan, as they continue to develop their skills and prove they are ready to compete for a place in the Arsenal side. This week, a quality performance from Jon Toral was the clear highlight, in an otherwise down week for Arsenal loanees.

The players away on loan are:

  • Wojciech Szczesny (GK), on loan to AS Roma in Serie A
  • Carl Jenkinson (RB), on loan to West Ham United in the Premier League
  • Yaya Sanogo (ST), on loan to Ajax in the Eredivisie
  • Serge Gnabry (MID), on loan to West Bromwich Albion in the Premier League
  • Ainsley Maitland-Niles (MID), on loan to Ipswich Town in the Championship
  • Isaac Hayden (CB/MID), on loan to Hull City in the Championship
  • Chuba Akpom (ST), on loan to Hull City in the Championship
  • Jon Toral (MID), on loan to Birmingham City in the Championship
  • Emiliano Martinez (GK), on loan to Wolves in the Championship
  • Wellington Silva (MID), on loan to Bolton in the Championship
  • Gedion Zelalem (MID), on loan to Rangers in the Scottish Championship

Wojciech Szczesny played the full 90 minutes as Roma drew 2-2 at Bologna in Serie A. Szczesny will not have been happy to concede two goals, as Bologna managed only three shots on target in the match. Bologna scored the equalizer quite late on from the penalty spot, to share the points.

Carl Jenkinson started and completed the entire match as West Ham fell 4-1 to Tottenham. It was a bad day at the office for almost all involved on the West Ham side, as the Hammers seemed to fall apart without Dimitri Payet in the midfield to make things happen.

Yaya Sanogo  did not play for Ajax in their 5-1 win over Cambuur.

Serge Gnabry did not play as West Brom defeated Arsenal 2-1 on Saturday.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles came on as a 69th minute substitute as Ipswich drew 2-2 with Wolves. On the other side, Emiliano Martinez did not feature for Wolves.

Isaac Hayden was an unused substitute for Hull City in their 1-1 draw with Bristol City. Teammate Chuba Akpom started, and played 62 minutes. Akpom’s best chance came just before the break as he put a header just wide.

Jon Toral started and played the full 90 minutes as Birmingham fell 1-0 to Charlton. Toral was the main man for Birmingham, attempting seven of their 21 shots and forcing two saves.  He also set up five chances for teammates, as he was very much the key to the Birmingham attack. Despite the loss, the clear bright spot was the quality performance from Jon Toral. Here’s his best chance of the night, which was well saved by the Charlton keeper.

Wellington Silva did not play for Bolton in their 2-1 loss to Reading, as he continues to work his way back from injury.

Gedion Zelalem played the full 90 minutes for Rangers in their 1-1 draw with Livingston. Zelalem, playing alongside Andy Halliday and Jason Holt in the midfield, did well to retain possession throughout the game, but Rangers were only able to create the one goal.
