Syndergaard, Mets offense dominate Royals to take Game 3 of World Series

Noah Syndergaard retired 12 straight batters, David Wright homered and drove in four runs as the New York Mets defeated the Kansas City Royals 9-3 to win Game 3 of the World Series. The win cut Kansas City’s lead in the series to 2 games to 1.

After throwing the first pitch of the game over Alcides’ Escobar’s head, Syndergaard gave up a run on a fielder’s choice by Eric Hosmer in the 1st. Four hits in the second including an RBI single by Alex Rios followed by a passed ball on catcher Travis d’Arnaud would give the Royals a 3-2 lead, and started action in the Mets bullpen. However Syndergaard would settle down and the Royals would not score another run on the night. In between, Wright hit his first career World Series home run, a two-run blast to left-center field off of losing pitcher Yordano Ventura to give the Mets a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first. Syndergaard proceeded to retire every Kansas City hitter between the last out of the 2nd and the first two hitters of the 6th before Mike Moustakas reached on an infield single.

New York took the lead for good on a 347 foot home run to right field by Curtis Granderson, his 2nd long ball of the series. Michael Conforto hit an infield single in the bottom of the 4th to extend the Mets’ lead to 5-3. \

The National League champs broke the game open in the 6th when Juan Uribe, pinch-hitting for Syndergaard, singled in Juan Lagares, Wright singled to score Wilmer Flores and Uribe and Yoenis Cespedes capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly to score Granderson and build the Mets lead to 9-3.

Syndergaard went 6 innings, allowing 3 runs on 6 hits, walking 2 and striking out 7. The Mets’ bullpen proceeded to retire the last 9 Royals of the game with Addison Reed, Tyler Clippard and Jeurys Familia each pitching a perfect inning.

Game 4 is Saturday night with Chris Young scheduled to start for the Royals against Mets rookie Steven Matz.
