Logan Couture suffers broken leg, out 4-6 weeks

San Jose Sharks forward Logan Couture has suffered a broken bone in his leg. He is scheduled to undergo surgery on for a tibial fracture later this weekend. Couture is expected to miss four to six weeks rehabilitating from the injury.

Couture’s injury occurred during a 5-on-5 drill in practice Thursday morning, where he slid feet first into the boards of the Prudential Center in New Jersey.

Earlier Friday morning, Sharks general manager Doug Wilson issued a statement on Couture’s injury.

Logan was injured in practice on Thursday in New Jersey and suffered a fractured right fibula at the ankle. He will be returning to San Jose to undergo surgery under Kaiser Permanente ‘s medical staff,” says Doug Wilson.

In 3 games this season, Logan Couture has an assist. Last year he had 27 goals and 62 points in 82 games.

Couture took to twitter to thank the fans for the support he’s gotten over the last day with his injury.

Quick thank you to everyone for kind words. I know the boys will hold it down. I’ll be back.

“You don’t replace Logan Couture,” Sharks captain Joe Pavelski said. “He has a big presence through the middle for us. He plays in all situations, [penalty kill], power play. So we’re filling a few holes. But guys will slide into those slots and do the job. It doesn’t really change the way we want to play or anything.”

With the absence of Couture, the Sharks have called up 2014 1st round pick Nikolai Goldobin. In 9 games with the Worchester Sharks last season, Goldobin put up 5 points. The Sharks will be getting set to take on the New Jersey Devils Friday night at the Prudential Center, looking to extend their record to 4-0-0.

The Sharks are also expected to move Thomas Hertl from the third line up to Couture’s spot on the second line.

“I don’t think I’ve played with [Hertl] as a centerman yet, so it will be a little interesting,” Patrick Marleau said. “He’s a big body, highly skilled, and I’m looking forward to him protecting pucks down low and making plays.”
