Brent Seabrook Extended by Chicago Blackhawks

The Chicago Blackhawks have signed defenseman Brent Seabrook to an eight-year/$55 million contract extension with an AAV of $6.875 million, as reported first by Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman.

The Blackhawks blueliner was set to become an unrestricted free agent after the 2015-2016 season.

Seabrook, 30, has spent his entire NHL career with the Blackhawks after being selected by Chicago with the 13th overall pick in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft.

His most recent contract with the Blackhawks was a five-year/$29 million deal that he signed back in 2011.

During his NHL tenure in the Windy City, the Richmond, BC native has captured three Stanley Cups and notched 11 points in 23 games last postseason.

In international play, Seabrook has won gold medals when representing Canada in the 2003 IIHF World U18 Championships, the 2005 World Junior Championships and the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

As for his career numbers, Seabrook comes into his 11th NHL season with 318 points in 763 regular season games. In the playoffs, Seabrook is well-known for his clutch scoring, having already provided 57 points in 112 contests.

In 2013, he scored the overtime series-clinching goal against the Detroit Red Wings in the Western Conference Semifinals and the overtime goal in Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final against the Boston Bruins that same season.

He was recently announced as an alternate captain by Chicago, replacing Patrick Sharp, who was traded to the Dallas Stars in the offseason.

Seabrook’s contract will expire after 2023-24 season and now ranks third on the Blackhawks roster in cap hits for next season behind Jonathan Toews ($10.5M) and Patrick Kane ($10.5M).
