NFL Injury Spree in Week 2

Whether it was by ambulance or by being carted off the field, an NFL injury spree occurred in Week 2 of the regular season.

The most notable injury that required an ambulance on the field was that of Buffalo Bills safety Aaron Williams who sustained a neck injury against the New England Patriots. From numerous televised shots, it was apparent that a helmet-to-helmet hit with Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman jolted his neck. However, he was released from the hospital late Sunday evening.

QUARTERBACKS INJURED

  • Chicago Bear quarterback Jay Cutler left with a hamstring strain as a result of trying to tackle Arizona Cardinal Safety Tony Jefferson after throwing a pick-six before the half. He is listed as day-to-day.
  • Dallas Cowboy quarterback Tony Romo fractured his collarbone after Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Jordan Hicks fell on Romo and drove the Cowboys quarterback into the ground.
  • Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford left the game after being hit several times during the matchup with the Minnesota Vikings. He was scheduled to undergo X-Rays for possible rib injuries.
  • New Orleans Saints quarterback Dree Brees suffered a minor injury to his throwing shoulder. It is possible the Super Bowl winning quarterback could miss several games.

KEY OFFENSIVE PLAYERS INJURED

  • Atlanta Falcons starting running back Tevin Coleman was carted off the field after he sustained a rib injury against the New York Giants.
  • The Miami Dolphins suffered two injuries in their game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Running back Lamar Millar injured his ankle in the fourth quarter, and offensive lineman Branden Albert hobbled off the field with a hamstring injury.
  • San Francisco 49ers running back Carlos Hyde left in the second half of the 49ers’ game against the Pittsburgh Steeleres with a head injury, but he was later cleared to return. Also, 49ers tight end Vance McDonald left in the second quarter with a knee injury.
  • Green Bay Packers running back Eddie Lacy was forced to leave the game against the Seattle Seahawks after twisting his ankle. Packers wide receiver Davante Adams was also sidelined with an ankle injury.
  • New York Giants offensive lineman Ereck Flowers exited the game against the Falcons with an ankle injury.
  • St. Louis Rams wide receiver Tavon Austin left the game against the Washington Redskins and headed into the locker room to receive fluids.
  • Tennessee Titans offensive guard Chance Warmack strained his knee against the Cleveland Browns.
  • Houston Texans right tackle Jeff Adams was carted off the field with an air cast on his right leg after sustaining an injury in the Texans’ game against the Carolina Panthers.
  • New York Jets wide receiver Eric Decker left the game against the Colts in the fourth quarter with a knee injury. Early indications are it will not require surgery but Decker is expected to miss playing time.

KEY DEFENSIVE PLAYERS INJURED

  • Philadelphia Eagles linebackers Kiko Alonso (knee) and Mychal Kendricks (hamstring) both left left the game against the Cowboys early.
  • Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive lineman Gerald McCoy walked off the field with a shoulder injury in the fourth quarter against the Saints but seemed ok.
  • Arizona Cardinals linebacker LaMarr Woodley injured his right shoulder against the Chicago Bears and did not return.
  • Packers defensive end Josh Boyd sustained a broken ankle against the Seahawks and will be out for the remainder of the season.
  • Giants cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie sustained a concussion in the second half of the game against the Falcons and will have to follow concussion protocol.

To add insult to injury, many of these injuries turned fantasy football leagues on its head. Hopefully, the majority of these injuries are short-term and the injured players will be back on the field in time for the playoffs.
