Bouchard Withdraws from US Open with Concussion

Citing a head injury which turned out to be a concussion, Eugenie Bouchard has withdrawn before her 4th Round match against Roberta Vinci at the US Open with a concussion. The Canadian sustained the injury on Friday after winning her mixed doubles match with Nick Kyrgios in the locker room when she slipped, fell, and hit her head. She withdrew from women’s and mixed doubles yesterday but delayed withdrawing from singles until the last second with the hope that she could still compete.

The withdrawal ends a difficult Grand Slam season in which last year’s Wimbledon finalist could only muster a quarterfinal showing at the Australian Open as her best finish in a major. She suffered consecutive first-round losses at the French Open and Wimbledon to Kristina Mladenovic and qualifier Ying-Ying Duan, respectively. The loss to Duan knocked the Canadian out of the Top 20 for the first time since she made her run to the semifinals to the Australian Open to start her 2014 campaign.

Her hard court season consisted of one win and her last match before the US Open was a humbling 6-1 6-0 defeat to Vinci in New Haven, in which she lost 12 straight games after holding the opening game of the match. After announcing the hiring of Jimmy Connors for the US Open, her form started to turn around at the Open, where she defeated Alison Riske, Polona Hercog, and Dominika Cibulkova in the first 3 rounds, defeating the Slovak in 3 highly entertaining sets. Unfortunately for the young Canadian, her run has to end here with a concussion, something that the sports world has begun to worry about with incrasing seriousness in recent years.
