UPDATE: Indiana Dismisses Antonio Allen from Team Following Arrest

The Indiana football program received some shocking news Tuesday afternoon as it was revealed that safety Antonio Allen was arrested and charged with multiple drug related offenses. On Wednesday, the team announced he had been dismissed from the team.

The Indiana football program was rocked by some shocking news late Tuesday.

It was revealed earlier in the day that IU safety Antonio Allen was arrested on Tuesday afternoon and charged with multiple felonies related to possession and dealing of drugs. He was set to begin his junior season with the Hoosiers in the fall.

There were further developments in the situation on Wednesday. After spending the night in the Monroe County Jail, Allen posted $75,000 bail. Shortly thereafter, Indiana announced his dismissal from the program. He had originally been suspended indefinitely when news of his arrest became public.

According to Monroe County Jail records, Allen was taken into custody slightly after 5 PM local time after Indiana State Police served a warrant for his arrest. The charges filed against him include dealing in methamphetamines, narcotics, heroin and cocaine. The heroin offense is described as a Level Two charge because it involved more than ten grams of the drug. He has also been charged with a firearm-related offense.

Allen was a highly sought after prospect out of Ben Davis High School in the Indianapolis area. He was one of the biggest commitments in head coach Kevin Wilson’s 2013 recruiting class. Rivals.com ranked it 38th in the nation and fifth best in the Big Ten.

In his two seasons with the Hoosiers, he has been a major contributor on the defensive side of the football. Despite missing nearly half the year after tearing his ACL against Michigan, he was named to the BTN.com all-Freshman team (honorable mention) in 2013. He also received all-Big Ten honorable mention recognition last season by both the coaches and media. His 74 tackles in 2014 led all IU defensive players.

Though the legal process still has to play itself out in this particular case, given the severity of these charges it’s likely that Allen has played his last down of football for the foreseeable future and possibly ever. It’s an unfortunate development in the life of a player who had a promising career ahead of him.
