Some quick notes for the Set Up & Shut Down report May 6th:

Chris Hatcher looks to be the lead man for saves for the Dodgers until Kenley Jansen gets back. He looked good on Saturday tossing a scoreless inning in only 9 pitches for his 2nd save of the season. Then on Sunday the Dodgers and Diamondbacks went 13 innings but in the 9th inning with the game tied 0-0, skipper Don Mattingly went with Yimi Garcia instead of Hatcher. In fact Hatcher didn’t pitch at all that game. Hold up though because Monday against the Brewers, Hatcher came in to relieve Kershaw in the 8th with the Dodgers up 3-2 and Adam Lind on 2nd base. Hatcher though gave up two hits and recorded his 1st blown save of the season, and the Brewers went on to win 4-3. There was not a save situation on Tuesday so I’m going to switch Garcia and Hatcher for the time being. Another bad outing from Hatcher and that could change. It’s best to own both players, especially in deep leagues, until Jansen returns from the DL.

Jeurys Familia recorded his N.L. leading 11th save last night against the Orioles. He did give up a moon shot to Chris Davis but luckily he had a small cushion to work with and was able to close the door after. His job is in no danger.

On the other side of the league, Andrew Miller recorded his A.L. leading 11th save against the Blue Jays last night. He originally wasn’t needed but David Carpenter gave up 3 runs in the 9th inning to create a save situation which Miller took care of. Miller still hasn’t given up a run this season.

The Mariners were up 4-2 last night when Danny Farquhar was summoned for the 8th inning to hold down the lead. He did not. Instead he gave up 2 earned runs on 3 hits with one walk and no strikeouts recording his 2nd blown save of the season. Dominic Leone could be moved ahead of Farquhar but he has been shaky so far this season. Carson Smith is doing very well in his rookie season for the Mariners so I wouldn’t be shocked to see skipper Lloyd McClendon start using him more in high pressure situations.

Trevor Rosenthal blew his first save of the season on Sunday against the Pirates allowing a HR off Jung-Ho Kang. He was given a day off on Monday and then came back last night firing on all cylinders notching his 9th save against the Cubs. Jordan Walden was recently placed on the 15-day DL with a biceps injury so I will replace him with Kevin Siegrist in the set up role.

David Robertson recorded his 4th save in non-dramatic fashion last night. It has been frustrating for owners who drafted Robertson and expected more saves already but the season is still young and saves usually tend to come in bunches. Be happy with the 18 K and 0 earned runs through his first 10 innings.

Aroldis Chapman came into a non-save situation against the Pirates last night but threw a whopping 30 pitches walking 3 and striking out 3. He *should* be fine to pitch today if needed as he did not pitch on Monday.

Speaking of dominant relief pitching, there are currently 4 closers (7 relievers all together) who have pitched more than 10 innings and have yet to give up an earned run this season. The Yankees have two of them with Dillen Betances and Andrew Miller and one can argue that they have the best 1-2 punch in the game.
