Dark horse players for the playoffs

When creating a team for a playoff fantasy pool, it’s normally a good idea to take the top players on the teams you think will go on a deep run. After the first few rounds though, you’ll need to have good secondary scorers to round out your team. Today we will look at some names that could be Dark horse players for the playoffs.

Alex Galchenyuk, Montreal Canadiens

With the Montreal Canadiens looking to go deep in the playoffs, they will need their secondary scoring to come through for them. Galchenyuk was 4th on the team in goal scoring during the regular season, and is certainly one of the better goal scorers on one of the top teams in the league. If the Canadians are able to go on another run this year, Galchenyuk will be looking to play a large role in that, after only appearing in five of his team’s playoff games last year.

Ryan Callahan, Tampa Bay Lightning

Callahan has quietly matched his career best 54 points this season, and appears to be a nice fit with the Lightning. He plays a physical game, and is known for being a player that plays with his heart on his sleeve. He’ll give it his all during the playoffs, and will be looking for better results than he got last year when his team was eliminated in four games. Playing on a line with Steven Stamkos will greatly increase his fantasy value, but he would still bring value even if he does not stay there. He was shuffled throughout the lineup during the regular season and still found ways to be productive, and that should not change in the post-season.

Mikael Granlund, Minnesota Wild

The Minnesota Wild have been a very strong team ever since acquiring Devan Dubnyk, and they could carry that success into the playoffs. The Wild will have a tough match-up no matter who they face, and if they are to come through, Granlund would surely play a key part in that. He already showed last spring how well he can play in the big games, and with another year under his belt, he could be in line for a big post-season.

Marcus Johansson, Washington Capitals

Johansson has notched a career high 20 goals and 47 points this year. He has spent time playing on a line with Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom, which would help with production, but he has also been able to produce without them while playing on the second line. He is no longer just the third man on the top line, instead he could now been the main source of secondary scoring should Ovechkin and Backstrom get shut down by an opposing team’s defense.

Kevin Hayes, New York Rangers

Selecting a player on the President’s Trophy winning team is never a bad idea, and while the Rangers have several forwards worth picking up, Hayes will likely get overlooked by multiple people. The rookie has had a respectable season, posting 17 goals and 45 points. What makes him even more intriguing though is that 29 of his points have come after the All-Star break. He has gotten better as the season went on, and could continue that into the playoffs.
