Braves and Diamondbacks complete two-player trade

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — The Atlanta Braves and Arizona Diamondbacks completed a two-player trade late tonight, as Atlanta acquired right-handed pitcher Trevor Cahill and cash considerations in exchange for minor-league outfielder Josh Elander. Cahill will wear uniform number 34.

Cahill, 27, was originally selected by the Oakland Athletics in the second round (66th overall) of the 2006 draft out of Vista, Calif., High School. He made his Major League debut with the Athletics in 2009 and spent three seasons in Oakland’s rotation before being traded to the Diamondbacks in December 2011.

The 6-foot-4, 220-pound Cahill was an American League All-Star in his sophomore season in 2010, when he went 18-8 and finished fourth in the A.L. with a 2.97 ERA. His 34 starts that season led the league. In six Major League seasons, he has appeared in 186 games (170 starts) and owns a 64-69 record with a 4.07 ERA. Cahill has recorded 718 strikeouts and in 1040.1 innings pitched.

“We thought he was a good buy-low type of candidate,” Braves assistant general manager John Coppolella said. “He’s still young and has good stuff. We saw him four different times this spring. We think there should be some regression to the mean, based on what he has done in the past.”

“He showed a real good fastball up to 94 [mph] with a real good sink,” Coppolella said. “We think he helps make us better.”

Elander, 24, was the Braves’ sixth-round selection in the 2012 draft out of Texas Christian University and posted a .275 batting average in 208 minor-league games (three seasons).

With Cahill’s arrival, Atlanta will have 37 active players in its Major League camp. The Braves begin the 2015 campaign on Monday, April 6, at Miami (4:10 p.m., SportSouth).
