Last Word on Sports is proud to present their hockey podcast, On the Powerplay with Ben and Dave.  Join Ben Kerr and Dave Gove each week as they take a look around the Hockey World focusing on the big issues of the NHL and elsewhere.

Dave and Ben are back with another episode of on the powerplay.

On the Powerplay – Ovechkin 50, Wings Goalies, Frozen Four

For the sixth time in his career Alex Ovechkin has scored 50 goals in a career, and he has also tied Peter Bondra for the Capitals franchis goal scoring record. We look at where this accomplishment puts Ovechkin in history. Where does he stand amongst the greatest goal scorers of his era, and of all time? Can he challenge Gordie Howe for the second most goals in NHL history? What about Wayne Gretzky for first?

Moving on we look at the recent fight between teammates Phil Kessel and David Booth. What brought on this fight and what does it mean for both players and their potential futures in a Toronto Maple Leafs uniform? We’ve heard all the rumors, but is there a scenario where the Leafs would keep Phil Kessel.

Next we look at the Detroit Red Wings. Could they lose third in the division to the Boston Bruins down the stretch? What is the health situation for Pavel Datsyuk and can the Wings win without him, if they are forced to? What about the goalie controversy, what is going on with Petr Mrazek and Jimmy Howard? Who will start down the stretch and could Howard be on the move before next season.

The boys look at the announcement of a new women’s pro hockey league, the NWHL. They look at the history of women’s hockey leagues and why this league will be different. They also look at the CWHL and what this new competitor in the marketplace means for that league, as well as the chance for women’s hockey to be successful and what they think needs to happen to make it work.

Moving on to college hockey, the boys recap the weekend that was in the NCAA Men’s Hockey Tournament filled with big upsets and surprising results. They also look ahead to next week’s frozen four and the big time matchup between North Dakota and Boston University, and how much of an effect home ice will have.

Lastly the boys talk about some of the great games they have been to, and the souvenirs they still have from Frozen Fours and Memorial Cups of the past.
