Fantasy Profile: Starling Marte, OF, Pittsburgh Pirates

LWOS Ranking 11, Captain’s Value: $17.53

For those of you who missed the Yasiel Puig profile, please check it out here, I suggested an alternative to Puig as being Pirates Outfielder Starling Marte about a round later in drafts. Marte has been more productive and more consistent in his two and half seasons in the Majors, and has a pedigree that is just as strong as Puig. If you are looking for an early 35 Stolen Bases with plus Batting Average, while not taking a large dip in the power categories; Marte is someone you should invest in to pair with your big time First Round power selections.

At 26 years and 6 months old on Opening Day, Marte is entering a time where many players experience a growth in power numbers; he is expected to be moved down in the order which should provide him with more RBI opportunities. This move in the order can sometimes be coupled with a drop in stolen base opportunities, but Marte has been quoted as saying he always has the approach of getting on base, stealing bases, and getting into scoring position; so I do not foresee a likely drop in stolen bases.

Every season I attempt to make a list of players who could become likely First Round picks in the following year, Marte is at the top of that list this season. I would suggest having some exposure to him in some of your leagues and be looking for a career year to the likes of .290-15-85-60-35.
