Fantasy Profile: Kris Bryant, 3B, Chicago Cubs

LWOS Ranking 16, Captain’s Value: $4.47

Baseball’s top prospect is slated to begin his major league career as the starting 3B for the Chicago Cubs. The 6’5” Bryant will likely have to wait in the minors first, potentially upwards of 21 days, so the organization can gain another year of control. Come late April or May, Bryant will unleash upon the league his prodigious raw power.

The reigning Minor League Player of the Year presents few risks aside from strikeouts, but it should be noted that some have compared him to George Springer, based on a poor contact rate in the minors. Springer, another highly touted prospect that debuted last year, struggled mightily with strikeouts and adjusting to the major league game. Of course, Bryant is considered to be a more prestigious prospect than Springer and so he should theoretically have less trouble making the adjustment. Still, those in leagues with SO and AVG should plan accordingly.

On the positive side, Bryant should undoubtedly be a great source of power. The Cubs will be featuring a much more talented lineup than they have fielded in the past and so Kris should have plenty of opportunities to drive in runs. He won’t steal bases, is a strikeout risk, and a potential batting average liability, but he has phenomenal upside.

Be aggressive if you want Bryant, because he will go fast when it is his turn. Seek him out in your draft and make sure to keep tabs on when his name is coming up. He won’t play for about a month so be sure to plan for his absence, especially in Roto leagues.
