Indian Wells Day Two Review

Day two of the men’s singles got underway on Friday with home favorite Sam Querry up against the in form Sergiy Stakhovsky on the stadium court. The American got off to a good start, breaking his Ukranian opponent twice to take the first set 6-2. Querry’s 17 aces and 29 winners were not enough to save him against the consistent play from his opponent. Despite dropping the first set the 29 year old bounced back to take the match 2-6 6-4 6-2 in 1 hour and 27 minutes. The Ukrainian will next face big serving number 9 seed Tomas Berdych.

Indian Wells Day Two Review

Another Ukrainian to advance to the second-round was Alexandr Dolgopolov who came through his match against Canadian Frank Dancevic in just over an hour. ‘The Dog’ fired 28 winners and 7 aces past his opponent to win the match 6-2 7-5. The Ukrainian will next face 29th seed Santiago Giraldo for a place in the third round.

Australian teenager Nick Kyrgios made his BNP Parisbas Open debut in Indian Wells on Friday and it looked as if he’d been playing there for years. The 19 year old managed a comfortable win against his opponent, American Denis Kudla on the main stadium, winning 86 per cent of his service points to claim the match 6-4 7-5 in just 68 minutes. This is the first tournament back for the youngster after spending some time out from the game with a back injury, he last competed at The Australian Open where he reached the quarter-final stage. He will next face number 11 seed Grigor Dimitrov- Many people will be watching Nick to see just how far he can go in this tournament.

The Americans had a rather mixed day of fortunes at the BNP Paribas Open with some big names falling and emerging talents progressing. Despite the experienced Querry going out in the first round Donald Young, Jack Sock and Steve Johnson are keeping American hopes alive in Indian Wells. Young came through against Carreno Busta of Spain in 1 hour and 29 minutes to win 6-3 6-4. Jack Sock prevailed against Yen Hsun-Lu in a tight two hour match. Steve Johnson also found his way into the next round beating Marcel Granollers in just over an hour to take it 6-2 6-3. Johnson will play Ivo Karlovic in the next round while Young will face Jeremy Chardy and Sock will take on Gilles Muller.

The top seeds learnt of their second round opponents after Diego Schwartzman, Igor Sijsling and Robin Haase all advanced. Roger Federer will face Schwartzman after he beat Jerzy Janowicz 6-4 3-6 7-6 in a battle lasting 2 hours and 15 minutes. Stanislas Wawrinka will take on Dutch Robin Haase in the second round after he overcame Alex bolt 6-4 6-2. And Rafael Nadal will also face a Dutchman, Igor Sijsling who got past Filip Krajinovic 6-4 3-6 6-2.

Other winners of the day were Andrey Golubev who saved 1 match-point to overcome Dustin Brown 6-7 6-3 7-6. Simone Bolelli also progressed after saving all of his 6 break points faced against Tomaz Bellucci to win 6-2 6-7 6-4. Victor Hanescu defeated Mikhail Youzhny, Michael Berrer defeat Estrella Burgos, Malek Jaziri defeated Tasumi Ito and Martin Klizan will also move onto the second round after defeating Pablo Andujar.

There will be even more exciting action on Saturday as the top seeds get to see some action. The pick of the day is home favorite Ryan Harrison against number 5 seed Kei Nishikori. The American proved recently he can beat the big players on the big stages after defeating Dimitrov in Acapulco. With the support of the home crowd it could be a thriller.
