FANTASY PROFILE: JED LOWRIE, SS, HOUSTON ASTROS

LWOS Ranking 18, Captains’ Value $1.36

If you have Jed Lowrie as your starting SS in a 10- or 12-team fantasy league, your team is in trouble.

That said – you can’t go wrong with the 30-year-old Lowrie as your backup infielder. Many may be turned off by his .249/.321/.355 line last season, but consider: He had 29 doubles (2nd best in his 7-year MLB career), 50 RBI (2nd), 51 walks (1st), 59 runs (2nd) and 136 games played (2nd). And those stats compiled despite the fact he fractured his finger last August and didn’t play much after.

The 6-foot, 180-pounder will get the chance to start and bat second in the improved Houston Astros’ lineup. That should help his runs/RBI potential while his power numbers and average (he did hit .290 just 2 years ago) will most likely improve at the hitter-friendly Minute Maid Park.

Is Lowrie, who signed a 3-year deal with the ‘Stros, just warming the seat for super prospect Carlos Correa? Definitely. But fantasy owners could do much worse than a late-round flier on Lowrie, who will also give owners multiple-position eligibility (2B/SS) at draft time.
