Fantasy Profile: Rougned Odor, 2B, Texas Rangers

Rougned Odor was thrust into the 2B gig for the Rangers in 2014 despite being just 20 and never playing above AA. All things considered, he did pretty well.

FANTASY PROFILE: ROUGNED ODOR, 2B, TEXAS RANGERS

LWOS Ranking 23, Captain’s Value: $1.40

Ah, Rougned. A rose by any other name would be much easier to pronounce. All things considered, Rougned Odor handled himself pretty well in 2014. When the oft-injured top prospect Jurickson Profar went down with another injury and Donnie Murphy showed that he was Donnie Murphy, Odor was called upon to play second base for the Texas Rangers. This was clearly not the original plan for the Rangers, as Odor was a 20-year-old prospect who had not seen any action above the AA level.

For a 20-year-old who just skipped AAA, he played pretty well. None of his numbers from his 114 games and 417 big league plate appearances really jump out at you, he showed a little pop and some aggressiveness on the base paths- but I’ll say it again: he was 20 years old and had never seen action above AA. He struggled at times with his swing selection and strike zone recognition, but there is plenty of room to improve on that.

Right now, Jurickson Profar is Odor’s only competition for playing time at second base, and if Profar can’t prove that he can stay healthy, the job is Odor’s. Ideally, the Rangers would probably like both of them to start the season in the minors, since both of them are very young (Odor will be 21 and Profar 22 on Opening Day) and neither of them are finished products, but somebody is going to have to play second.

Right now, Odor isn’t really a sound fantasy investment as your starting second baseman or even your middle infield spot because his playing time is up in the air. However, he’s definitely worth a stash as a bench player in deeper leagues and especially in keeper/dynasty leagues. His upside is very appealing at second base: 15 HR/15 SB steals with a batting average around. At his age, he has plenty of time to reach that potential.
