FANTASY PROFILE: DEE GORDON, 2B, MIAMI MARLINS

LWOS Ranking 5, Captain’s Value: $19.17

We’re bullish on Dee Gordon and here’s why: Speed never slumps. To steal bases you have to first get on base, and therein lies the problem for most owners regarding Gordon. There has been much ado about Gordon’s horrid OBP and underwhelming batting average, which by the way is especially bad for a lead off hitter, but we’re unconvinced that his terrible tendencies will follow him to South Beach. Why?

Bunts.

In 2011 Gordon somehow managed to hit over .300, which allowed his speed on the basepaths to make him a very valuable fantasy commodity. Fast forward a few years and it would appear 2011 was a fluke never again to be repeated. However, in 2014 the old Dee seemed to rear his head, in the form of a career high GB/FB rate, and a career high bunt total.

We’ve seen this before, from players like Juan Pierre, who have managed to make a career out of slapping singles and running out bunts. Perhaps that memory is still fresh in Miami.

Steamer projections have Dee Gordon’s BABIP dropping precipitously, and along with it his batting average, but we’re not as pessimistic. Perhaps it is unwise to think he’ll continue hitting .290, but a smaller drop-off and a better retention of value would not surprise us at all.
