Fantasy Profile: Joe Mauer, 1B, Minnesota Twins

When the Twins signed Joe Mauer to a contract of $23 million per year for eight years, I think they expected more than he has produced. As a local boy made good, the pressure to sign Mauer before the evil Yankees grabbed him was immense. After an MVP year in 2009, with 28 HR, 96 RBI’s and a batting average of .365, a WAR of 7.8 (and all of that as a Catcher), Mauer received 27 of 28 first-place votes in the MVP selection process. Last year, Mauer had 4 HR, 55, RBI’s and an average of .277 (and that as a first baseman). During the 2014 season, Mauer’s statistics declined from 2013 as his batting average declined by 50 points, slugging percentage dropped by 105 points and on-base percentage declined by 43 points. While Mauer is a candidate for a rebound, the lack of power and a pedestrian Twins lineup should relegate Mauer to a late-round fantasy selection by a team who was able to find power at places other than 1B.
