Athleticism: B+

Has great athletic ability and played all over the field from his deep safety role. Has great range and foot speed to play a centerfielder role and can play from sideline to sideline. Has very fluid hips and very quick change of direction ability. Good straight line acceleration and can close in on a target in a hurry.

Coverage: B-

Excels in coverage with a great combination of athletic ability and instincts. Reads the quarterback’s eyes and has great range and speed to arrive at the football and make a play. Doesn’t hold up as well in man coverage and in one-on-one situations where he can’t read the quarterback and can have trouble staying in phase with his receiver. Has a nose for the football and good ball skills to track and catch interceptions. Made few plays on the ball that didn’t result in picks.

Run Support: D+

Is aggressive when running the alley and getting to the perimeter of the tackle box. However, he will come in too hot and overrun the play as a result. Makes few plays in the middle of the field and is often on the boundaries or downfield, rarely facing blockers. Comes hard in pursuit but takes poor angles and is outpaced on what should be routine plays.

Tackling: D+

Exhibits poor technique as a tackler. Too often fails to wrap up and simply tries to throw a shoulder at ballcarriers, whether on the sideline or within the tackle box. Comes in too hot and doesn’t put himself in the best position to make a tackle in space. Has adequate pop as a hitter, but not enough to get away with poor technique or to consistently jar the football out or play an intimidating last line of defense.

Instincts: B-

More instinctive in coverage than versus the run. Can get fooled by play-action and take some poor angles to the football while playing the run. Has an innate sense of where to be in coverage and showed off game-changing potential in 2014. Only a one year starter and a redshirt sophomore who didn’t see nearly as much playing time as other prospects whom he will be held up against.

Red Flags: Experience, Project

Bottom Line: Coming off an historic season in which he intercepted 14 passes as a first year starter and redshirt sophomore, Gerod Holliman left school on an inimitable high note. Holliman has very good athletic ability and instincts to be high-end performer in coverage, but he is a near liability in run support and as a tackler. Holliman will likely look much better in the box score than he will on the field, and may struggle to live to the one spectacular season that put him on the map.

Comparison: Tashaun Gipson

Grade: 8.0 (3rd Round)
