Mix Diskerud: Third Time’s a Charm for MLS to Land Their Mix

It’s official, Mix Diskerud is bound for NYC. I wish I could write a proper Haiku or poem for this, but it may detract from the point (For further clarification on this, please see Diskerud’s twitter).

In short, this is a big deal. It is one of the first young up and coming United States Men’s National Team coups for the MLS. He is 24 and already has 25 caps and 5 goals for the National team. With no Frank Lampard in sight for the foreseeable future, he will be the center attacking midfielder for NYCFC and he wouldn’t have it any other way. Twice-spurned by Diskerud and his agent/father, it didn’t look like MLS would ever land him. He flirted with Portland in ’13 and Columbus last year, but seems to have found his ideal place on a large stage. He will be a strong asset to David Villa and Patrick Mullins up top, and with a grounded coach in Jason Kreis, he should be supported quite well. If Lampard does come in June, Diskerud will have at least four months to prove himself as the central attacking midfielder. If he eventually is bumped to a defensive midfield role it will undoubtedly please Klinsmann as he has been trying Diskerud out in such a role, believing Michael Bradley to be the attacking midfielder for the National Team.

Diskerud has continually provided a spark to the Mens National Team, usually off the bench, and is a creative and dynamic player that will serve NYCFC will. With Jozy Altiore and possibly Sacha Kljestan also coming to the MLS, it appears soccer fans will have more opportunities to see the American national team players on a weekly basis. Diskerud has previously played for Stabæk and Roseborg of Norway and was on loan to KAA Gent of Belgium. He has recently been out of contract and was being pursued in both Europe, South America and Mexico for his services.
