Arm: C-
Arm strength, especially downfield is relatively untested, and was not asked to make too many deep throws. Showed good zip on short and intermediate throws. Delivery is low, and height exacerbates the risk of tipped balls at the LOS.
Accuracy: B+
Shows very good accuracy. Footwork is clean for the most part and is a balanced thrower. Very good ball placement, and downfield accuracy. Flashes the ability to throw his receivers open.
Athleticism: C
Capable of scrambling to pick up a first down, but is not a true running threat. Mobile within the pocket and on bootlegs.
Mental: B-
Flashes the tools to be seriously considered as a developmental quarterback. Can go through his progressions quickly and see the entire field. However, played in an air-it-out spread offense at ODU and will need some polish on his reads. Has a tendency to stare down his intended target, but appears to be a very good decision-maker, knowing where to go with the ball and where to put it.
Intangibles: B-
A high character player and consistently handled challenges well. Has been a starter since his freshman year and has put up amazing numbers ever since. Has guided the Monarchs through their transition to an FBS team and was impressive against the step up in competition.
Red Flags: Level of Competition, Size
Bottom Line: Much like Jimmy Garoppolo last season, Taylor Heinicke has come from relative obscurity and figures to be a day two selection. While he is not suited for all offenses, Heinicke can succeed in a West Coast offense, and has a legitimate chance at being a starter one day.
