Cam Newton Fractures Back in Car Crash

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton was involved in a two-car crash this afternoon, suffering two lower back fractures. He was immediately taken to Carolinas Medical Center and he will spend the night there for testing. The Panthers released an official statement saying that he suffered “two transverse fractures in his lower back and no further internal injuries.” Thankfully, Newton is in fair condition and the injuries are not life-threatening.

Cam Newton Fractures Back in Car Crash

Does a transverse fracture sound familiar? If so, you probably remember Tony Romo being diagnosed with a similar injury last season. It is unknown how long Cam Newton will be out right now, but Tony Romo only missed one game last season. Newton’s status for this Sunday against the Buccaneers is questionable.

After a dominating performance against the Saints a couple days ago that launched the Panthers back into the divisional race, this is not the news the Panthers wanted to hear. Currently, they have the same number of losses as the Falcons and Saints, but a tie leaves them with one less win. The Buccaneers, Browns, and Falcons remain on their schedule. If Newton is out this week, experienced backup quarterback Derek Anderson will take the reins.

Hopefully Cam Newton is able to make a full recovery and return to the field as quickly as possible. His team certainly needs him, but obviously his health is more important.
