Tottenham Talkline: Can Spurs Lift the League Cup?

After the 2-0 win against Brighton, Tottenham Hotspur are now into the quarter-finals of the Capital One Cup, where they will next face Newcastle. The question is: can Tottenham go all the way?

The first two teams faced were from the Championship, but now the next obstacle for Tottenham is Newcastle, from the Premier League. This is a noticeable step up, especially when Newcastle have proven to be a hard team to play in the division. After beating Tottenham, then Manchester City in the League Cup, then Liverpool in the league, Newcastle are certainly a team to fear. Or are they? Teams will be wary of the threat they pose, especially Tottenham. It won’t be easy, but it’s definitely possible to win the match. Can Spurs progress? Sure.

Tottenham Talkline: Can Spurs Lift the League Cup?

If Tottenham do want to progress and win the cup, they’ll certainly want to avoid Liverpool and Chelsea. But, judging by the quality of the opposition those two sides face the next round, both teams should be through easily. The luck of the draw could really make or break Tottenham’s chances, but, as they say, the game is not won on paper. After all, facing Liverpool or Chelsea in the cup isn’t the same as facing them in the league. That being said, the quality of both sides has already shone this season; it won’t be easy, winning a cup isn’t easy. It would take hard work and a slice of luck for Tottenham to fell Chelsea – who are unbeaten in the league so far this season.

Obviously, Mauricio Pochettino must put out a strong side to have a hope of winning the competition. It may be viewed as the ‘Mickey Mouse Cup’ by many fans, but it’s silverware; nobody will turn down silverware. For Spurs, it may be a sweet taste to aid a bitter campaign in the Premier League. It’s been too long since the last trophy. Coincidentally, that last trophy was the very cup they fight to win now. The fans will hope that Pochettino isn’t completely alike to ex-manager Juande Ramos; to win a cup is a brilliant achievement, but the league position needs to be maintained as well.

That being said, does it really matter if Spurs go all out in this cup, leaving a weakened squad for the league? Top four seems a very distant possibility, with nothing short of a miracle able to deliver the very thought of it. But, Tottenham cannot slip too far down the league; else they will face finishing below what’s expected. No fan should be expecting top four, it’s simply unachievable. But, another thing is achievable: winning the Capital One Cup.

Harry Kane could just well be the poster boy for the Tottenham team, leading them to a glorious cup win. The young man can score goals, for sure. Emmanuel Adebayor is stuttering, Roberto Soldado misfiring, but Mr Kane? He is having a purple patch indeed. “Harry Kane, he is one of our own” a chant sung fanatically by the Tottenham faithful; a chant sung because the fans believe in him. With thousands in the crowd behind him, his confidence will be bolstered and so will his chances of scoring, in order to send Spurs to Wembley.

There’s a long road ahead for Tottenham. But, a positive outlook on this is: just three wins separate the players from lifting that trophy at Wembley. Just three.
