Dom Dwyer, forward for Major League Soccer’s Sporting Kansas City, has garnered a lot of attention lately. A few months ago, Dwyer was under media scrutiny for the infamous “selfie celebration” after he scored a goal. Ever since, the spotlight has only shone brighter, and deservedly so. On September 12th, Dwyer scored his 19th goal, breaking the club record set by Preki (Predrag Radosavljević) in the 1996 season. A record broken after having held for eighteen years was certainly very impressive.
Born in Cuckfield, England, Dwyer came to the United States for college. He played soccer for Tyler Junior College in Texas and then for the University of South Florida where he gained attention from MLS scouts. Dwyer was selected with the 16th overall by Sporting Kansas City in the 2012 SuperDraft. He progressed, went on loan to Orlando City, then returned with a fire lit beneath him and has been making history since.
Sporting Kansas City’s head coach Peter Vermes has said, “He’s got a work ethic that is incredible and at the same time an incredible hunger to score goals. He really doesn’t stop until you take him off the field.”
There have been many rumors of Dwyer playing in the 2018 World Cup for US men’s national team since he expects to receive his U.S. passport in 2017, in time for CONCACAF World Cup qualifying. There has been a lot of positive feedback from fans, believing that Dwyer would be a great addition to the USA team. Although Dwyer has missed a few golden opportunities to score goals, overall he has been very consistent and reliable. He was also chosen to play in the MLS All-Star game on August 6th, where he played for 19 minutes. Dwyer also earned MLS Player of the Month after scoring six goals in May, and has scored many game winning goals. For his relatively young age, he is well-traveled as well, having appeared in the CCL, US Open Cup, and a friendly.
With some international experience, Dom Dwyer could be a vital player for the USA men’s national team. He not only has the talent and skill, but also works very hard. Dwyer has the speed, determination, and mindset required of a player to play in important games. He stays calm when under a lot of stress and rarely shows his frustration. Even when Sporting Kansas City had a losing streak of four games earlier in the season, Dwyer kept positive and encouraging, saying “I hold my hands up and take full responsibility, should have put chances away! It will be better!”
Dwyer was right, and after winning their next game 4-0, Sporting went back to winning ways.
In four years when the next FIFA World Cup comes around, Dwyer will be more than ready to play and star as possibly even the captain for the USA team. If you haven’t seen this man play yet, I suggest you watch a Sporting Kansas City game as soon as possible!
