Gregg Popovich Agrees to Extension With Spurs

San Antonio Spurs long time head coach Gregg Popovich has agreed to a multi-year contract extension with the team, putting an abrupt end to the rumors of his inevitable retirement, and ensuring that he will be on the reigning NBA champion Spurs’ bench for several more seasons.

The exact terms of the deal have not yet been released.

Since taking over as head coach of the Spurs before the 1996-97 season, Popovich has been among the most successful coaches in NBA history, leading the team to a total of five titles in in 18 seasons. They defeated the Miami Heat in the 2014 NBA finals last month.

The decision to return was likely an easy one for Popovich, as the San Antonio Spurs will return almost the exact same championship roster next season that made the 2014 Western Conference playoffs look remarkably easy last season. With future hall of fame power forward Tim Duncan returning for at least one more season, along with Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker, the big three are back. Add them to the still developing NBA finals MVP Kawhi Leonard, and with key rotational player Boris Diaw recently re-signing, the Spurs look ready to make yet another title run in 2014-15.

In true Popovich fashion, the team released a very short statement to announce the news:

“The San Antonio Spurs today announced that head coach Gregg Popovich has agreed to a multi-year contract extension. Per club policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.”
