Mavericks, Dirk Nowitzki Agree to Three-Year Deal

As has long been expected, the Dallas Mavericks have agreed to a three-year deal with star power forward, face of the franchise, and future hall of famer Dirk Nowitzki. Nowitzki, despite being an unrestricted free agent, was never expected to even entertain possibility of leaving Dallas, where he has spent his entire 16-year NBA career and led the team to the 2011 NBA Championship over the Miami Heat.

Dirk Nowitzki Contract Details

The deal, which contains a rarely seen no-trade clause and a player option after the second season, will very likely end up being the last of Nowitzki’s storied career, and is worth a reported $30 million. Dirk Nowitzki will be 39-years-old when this contract expires, and there is a strong chance that he won’t play it all the way out if he retires before it concludes.

Mavericks Next Moves

Nowitzki’s $10-million-per-year salary, however, ends just about any chance that the Mavericks ever had of signing superstar free agent Carmelo Anthony, a dream which the team probably realized was dead after meeting with him for a reported two hours on Wednesday night.

The Mavericks have had a busy off-season rebuilding their roster thus far, and pulled off a pre-draft trade with the New York Knicks last week to bring former Maverick and all-star center Tyson Chandler back in the fold. If Anthony does indeed sign elsewhere, the team is expected to aggressively pursue Houston Rockets restricted free agent small forward Chandler Parsons as they continue to try and get back on top of the basketball world in a tough western conference.
