Report: Claude Giroux Arrested on Canada Day

There are a number of reports that Flyers centre Claude Giroux was arrested, and held overnight, by Ottawa police following an altercation in an Ottawa bar on Canada Day. Alcohol was supposedly a factor in the arrest.

According to Ottawa Sun, Giroux was drinking with friends at the Cabin, a Byward Market area bar, when he was arrested for allegedly grabbing the buttocks of a male police officer repeatedly.  He continued to grab the officer even when asked to stop. Giroux was driven away from the seen in the back of thea cruiser and held overnight. Today the Ottawa police say that no charges will be laid on Giroux.

“We are aware of reports surrounding Claude Giroux.” Flyers GM Ron Hextall said in a statement to Philadelphia media. “Until we have more information, we will withhold making any further comment.”

The 26-year-old Giroux is from nearby Hearst, Ontario, and lives in Ottawa during the off-season. He also played his junior hockey in the area for Gatineau in the QMJHL.,

Giroux was a Hart Trophy Finalist (NHL MVP) after scoring 28 goals and 58 assists for 86 points this season, good for third in the NHL scoring race.

This is the second straight summer that Giroux has made strange headlines in the off-season after signing an 8-year contract with the Flyers.  Last year he was golfing when his club shattered, damaging ligaments in his wrist.  Giroux required surgery and missed the Team Canada olympic summer orientation camp and struggled early in the season with Philadelphia before being one of the hottest players in the league from November onwards.
